Abiding peace, set in Puritan New England in the 1690’s, revolves around Christine, a quiet unassuming woman who devotes her life to caring for Pastor Jewett’s motherless children. Her peaceful life is abruptly interrupted when she is confronted one evening outside the widow’s cottage where she lives. The man, armed with a knife threatens the safety of the Pastor’s children if Christine doesn’t provide him with food and supplies.
When a murder takes place and the man is accused, though she is afraid of him, she believes he may be innocent of the murder. Her confession about providing supplies puts a strain on the growing feelings of affection between her and Pastor Jewett. Those events have required both of them to fully trust in God as never before.
The historical details of life in the late 1600’s are accurate and interesting. The suspense over the murder and the growing attraction between Christine and the Pastor, makes for a wonderful read.
